Primacy — ESG & Legislative Compliance Platform
Overview
This platform helps organizations manage legislative and ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) obligations in one place, from initial sustainability assessment through to ongoing reporting, policy tracking, and framework compliance. As the sole designer on the project, I worked directly with the client to translate a genuinely complex regulatory domain into a structured, usable tool, with a PM and tech lead advising at key points.
My Role & Process
The client held deep domain expertise in ESG and legislative compliance; my job was to structure that expertise into something usable. I worked closely with the client to understand the assessment process, reporting requirements, and how organizations actually track policy compliance today, then translated that into information architecture, user flows, and interface design across the platform.
What I Designed
Onboarding Assessment
An intake flow where organizations complete a structured assessment covering their sustainability reporting, generating the data that powers the rest of the platform.
Materiality Wheel
A data visualization hub, the materiality wheel itself, alongside a sentiment overview and material risk breakdown, generated directly from the organization's assessment data. This section leaned heavily on chart and graph design to make dense ESG data scannable at a glance.
ESG Frameworks
Reference sections covering EU and UK regulatory frameworks, with downloadable framework documents, designed to make dense regulatory text navigable rather than overwhelming.
Reports
A workspace for assigning, editing, sharing, approving, and downloading the reports and disclosures organizations are required to produce, supporting a full internal review workflow rather than a single static export.
Policies
A tracking view that automatically flags incomplete policies against what's required, giving organizations a clear view of compliance gaps needing attention.
Taxonomy
A reference section defining ESG taxonomy and the materiality wheel itself, helping users interpret the platform's own terminology and outputs.
Outcome
The client responded positively to the delivered platform and design direction. The engagement concluded at this stage.
Reflection
This project sharpened how I approach dense, rules-heavy domains, taking regulatory complexity that experts understand implicitly and making it navigable for people encountering it for the first time. Working near-solo with a client who held deep subject-matter expertise also meant owning the full translation from domain knowledge to interface, without a larger design team to share that interpretive work with.
